Athens.

A fragrance, a color, and a gust of wind. In a moment, the whole world is revealed to you.
Athens was the Balkans, albeit without the mud, always scented by the aura of the Saronic Gulf and the open horizon of the Mediterranean, blessed with ruins and mobility. In the past quarter-century, it became the metropolis of the South, a shining projection of Europe to the east, slightly conceited: people flocked here from all around, towards the sun, towards the sweet life of the Mediterranean, towards an unbroken promise. Is it becoming the Balkans again? Turning inward, towards closed self-sufficiency? No one can answer. Yet.
The scene differs at the grand opening of Thissio, where Athens displays ancient and modern, an eternal beauty with flowing hair, under the formidable shadow of the Acropolis. Byzantine and neoclassical churches, pine trees, eclectic residences, modern buildings, stone-paved promenades, funerary monuments, the ruins of the marketplace, perpetual human shadows, footsteps, whispers, and intermediaries have always been here. In the recess, next to the small park, another bazaar, more elegant, with new trinkets but equally useless, impractical, and charming. A swarm of strollers gazes at the crafts and junk, the “Made in China” trinkets of the fiver. Hypnotized, all, natives and foreigners alike, entranced by the beauty of the landscape and the trinkets.
What draws people to such markets?
The meltemi ripples the Aegean, drives away the cynical waves, reconciles with the inevitable end: “The wind’s blowing has no more to take away; the scent of pine and silence will easily soothe the wound caused by the sailors’ departure – the skylark, the owl, and the mosquito. Woman left behind, without a farewell, listen to the winds’ burial.”
The city follows you.
